SONG OF THE WEEK #9 / DEEP SEA DIVERS / DARWIN DEEZ

Something a little more contemporary this week with Darwin Deez. It's lo-fi heart is dusted with just the right level of production to fall on the good side of pop for me and is pretty much consistent throughout. I also wanted to pick something a little more upbeat today as I'm off on holiday Friday!

PICK ME UP / UPDATE

After an incredibly successful opening Thursday evening, which saw practically the entire London creative scene descend onto Somerset House, the "Pick Me Up"show has been running a few days now with great attendance. The show has something for every taste and is a far and reaching treat for the eyes with lots to purchase form the very reasonable to the exclusive. Well worth a trip down to the beautiful Somerset House if you can make it down before closing on the evening of 29th April.

You can see a few shots of my space at the show by clicking the link below.

OFFSET / PETER BLAKE

The brilliant OFFSET festival launched with full force last year in Ireland. It had talks from some of the creative industry's best including James Jean, Sir Peter Blake, Massimo Vignelli, Experimental Jetset and many more. In the months before OFFSET 2010 the organisers will be releasing footage from last years talks including the one above from Sir Peter Blake. Really interesting and well worth the watch. I wish my life was as glamorous!

SONG OF THE WEEK #8 / COW / SPARKLEHORSE

Following the recent and very early demise of Mark Linkous I thought it apt to pay my respects here. I distinctly remembering buying the band's debut "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot" from a dusty but brilliant record shop in Canterbury near the cinema. As a 15/16 year old living in a small sea side town I was totally transfixed with it's imagery, intimacy and very analogue layering. I remember the hours pawing over the cd booklet in my room with the cd on trying to find the narrative between images and wondering what that clown face was all about on the cover. For me it still stands today and, alongside their second album "Good Morning Spider," makes for some of Mark Linkous' finest work.

WALLZO / NEW WORK

The very talented, and somewhat dapper, Darren Wall of Wallzo has updated his site with some killer work. I particularly love the custom fonts he comes out with. Above is the font "Peg Board" created for the identity of web design agency "You,Me + Everyone."

SONG OF THE WEEK #7 / HOLD YOU HOLY / RAIN MACHINE

After seeing Rain Machine play an incredible gig at Underground Village on Monday they had to take SOTW. Since first hearing their eponymous debut late last year it's never been too far out of reach and was great to hear it so well translated to a live stage. Plus I'm a sucker for a cello in guitar based band. I strongly recommend the entire album (minus track 8).

SONG OF THE WEEK #6 / GLORIA / PATTI SMITH

I love everything about this album from the instantly iconic Maplethorpe cover to the better than original, and visceral, version of "My Generation" at it's close with all the dream like glory in between. Difficult to pick a track off here but "Gloria" builds so fantastically with it's gospel-esque chorus, and killer opening line, it made total sense.

SONG OF THE WEEK #5 / MOTHERLESS CHILD / KATHLEEN EMERY

Taken from the killer compilation album of rare Jazz Man singles "What is Wrong with Groovin' " is this amazing song from Kathleen Emery which was originally released in 1970. Thoroughly recommend listening to the whole album. Happy Easter!
