SONG OF THE WEEK #4 / DEEP WATER / PORTISHEAD

On listening to Portishead's "Third" album there was a plethora of the dark, brooding, layered and seeping songs we have come to expect from the band. Then all of a sudden seven songs in is this tiny ukulele based gem, somewhat reminiscent of Daniel Johnston, that comes straight out of nowhere. Just Lovely.

STUART LEE

If like me you missed it the first time round, or indeed want to relive the live stint he had at Leicester Square Theatre, here is the full series of "Stuart Lee's Comedy Vehicle". As refreshing as it is funny. Must see tv - not something you can say very often.

NEW YORK NEW YORK

A colleague from New York Magazine passed on this great short from the Wallpaper* site on where to go on a day out in down town NY. I think a pit stop at DBGB Kitchen and Bar is very much in order when the next visit comes around.

SONG OF THE WEEK #3 / THIRTEEN / BIG STAR

Today it was sadly announced that Alex Chilton from the band Big Star died of a suspected heart attack in Memphis at the age of 59. In their honour this week's SOTW is the exceptional, understated and completely charming "Thirteen" from their debut album "#1 Record." Just a beautiful snapshot of a certain age in every boy's life.

SONG OF THE WEEK #2 / FIRST COMMUNION / GANG GANG DANCE

Second up on SOTW is the brilliant Gang Gang Dance's "First Communion." The first time I heard the band was standing in a field in the Brecon Beacons at last year's Green Man Festival. There has been very few times that hearing a band for the first time live took me totally by surprise and left me quite so enraptured.

EMILY FORGOT / SELFRIDGES

If you head on down to London's Oxford Street Selfridges store over the next month or two you will run into the larger than life installation entitled "Parade" by the fantastic Emily Forgot. Commissioned by the prestigious retailer to bring some of her unique magic to what would otherwise be some very plain hoarding whilst major renovations are underway.

You can see more photos and images of the work at the designer/illustrator's website.

KELSEY BROOKES / MINI DOCUMENTRY

A really nice mini documentary with US artist Kelsey Brookes by The Creative Lives team. Some fantastic, incredibly detailed work with an amazing palette to boot. Who wouldn't want to live opposite a zoo?

SONG OF THE WEEK #1 / TANGO TILL THEY'RE SORE / TOM WAITS

Kicking off the Song of the Week feature for 2010 is none other than Tom Waits. The reason why being a combination of THAT voice and, in a song sprawling with great lyrics, one of my favourite lines "Let me fall out of the window with confetti in my hair." Genius.
