SONG OF THE WEEK #1 / WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES / NINA SIMONE

-
One of the most understated and beautiful covers I've heard, so effortlessly rendered by Nina Simone.

ANTHONY BURRILL / IN A NEW PLACE / KEMISTRY GALLERY

-
Anthony Burrill seems to be exhibiting in galleries more and more of late, the last being in Colette Paris. Tonight's opening at East London staple Kemistry Gallery, Burill's first London show since his fantastic collaboration with Michael Marriot at The Biscuit Building in January, showcases a selection of huge laser-cut perspex pieces alongside small run giclee prints in custom built perspex frames.
-
It is the translation from the flat letterpress work, for which Burrill became so renowned, into large three dimensional installations that really interests me most about his exhibitions. My favourite to date being the huge architectural collaboration with Michael Marriot from the show "The Right Kind of Wrong" which you can see here.
-
With prices from £3 for an "In an New Place" card pack to £4,200 for the super-sized mirrored laser-cut pieces there's something for everyone - a show well worth a look if you are graphically inclined.

MR BINGO / FAILED ROCKSTAR INTERVIEW

Good friend and fellow illustrator Mr Bingo has been interviewed by the lovely Robert Pheonix over at Failed Rockstar. Well worth a read and if you are unfamiliar with his work Mr Bingo's prolific and entertaining output is definitely in need of exploration.

KAWS / JEFF SOTO

Via Ballast

-
Two nice interviews with artists whose work I admire which resonated with me on a few different points. Namely the blurred line created by being an artist who both exhibits and works commercially - and what perceived ramifications that may have on one/both of those aspects of your career.

BECKS ART LABELS 2009 / REVEALED

-
Today the Becks Art Labels 2009 have been revealed officially on Flickr. Over the years the Beck’s bottle has been the canvas for art heavyweights such as Gilbert & George, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, and Jake & Dino Chapman to name but a few. This year's commissioned collection is on the theme of "Music Inspired Art."
-
For the project artists were asked to re-imagine the covers from some of the most iconic albums from the past four decades, using the music as inspiration. The cover I reworked was The Smiths "The Queen is Dead."
-
Fellow contributors include Si Scott, Kate Moross and Kid Acne among others. An exhibition is to follow later this Summer when the limited edition bottles are released.

THONET / MUJI / IRVINE & GRCIC

-
It's great to see the subject of a Frame Magazine article in which I was so engrossed ("A Perfect Match" by Petra Schmidt, May/Jun 2009 Issue) hit the streets this month in the form of Muji's collaboration with design stars James Irvine & Konstantin Grcic and legendary German manufacturer Thonet.
-
James Irvine's reworking of the original Viennese Coffeehouse Chair No14 designed by Michael Thonet in 1858 is my personal favourite from the series (pictured above). A retail price of £215 may not put this piece of classic design into as many hands as we might have hoped for but the integrity of the whole collaboration, with it's focus on craft, quality and attention to detail, is a really encouraging move from a multi-national.

SLOW CLUB / ALBUM RELEASED

-
Over the past few year's we've seen "Slow Club" play a few times supporting various bands and have always been both impressed and charmed with the Sheffield two-piece, in particular Rebecca Taylor's wooden chair percussion skills.
-
Their debut album "Yeah So" has now been released on the great British label Moshi Moshi (home of Hot Chip, Florence and the Machine and The Wave Pictures among others) on CD and as a download. From the reviews I've seen the charm and energy of their live shows has translated well into studio recording - I look forward to finding out for myself next week.

A KITCHEN DIARY

-
If anyone follows the Flickr account of the talented graphic designer Xavier Encincas you will be well aware of his love of, and evident skills in, cooking. Much to the appreciation of those that have drooled at the photos of his culinary creations, Xavier has now set up a recipe blog to accompany the beautifully shot dishes he creates called "A Kitchen Diary."
-
Having only just launched there are only three recipes archived to date but more are to come, and with the opportunity to submit your own, this blog will surely grow into the go to place for beautiful recipes accompanied by equally delicious photography.

WITCH JOB / 50K

-
Amoungst constant reminders of soaring unemployment rates it came as very welcome moment of fun when I heard of this job going down in Wookey Hole, Somerset. The current Witch is apparently retiring to a less arduous role on the local Treasure Island.

JACKSON

-
Whilst going through some older work I came across this portrait I did of Jackson a year or so ago.
-
I feel as indifferent as anyone toward the Jackson of the past few years but as a child of the 80's he was a complete hero so I thought I'd post this up as a mini tribute and recompense for all the hours I annoyed my parents by repeatedly singing Man in the Mirror into an unplugged microphone I had picked up at a boot fair.
